Most of us would like to think of ourselves as pretty smart, better than average, at least average. Not dumb, anyway. Somebody else is smarter but you’re pretty smart. It’s comparative­­—genius suffocates in a vacuum. Tell the truth: have you ever taken one of those tests (even once, to see what it’s like) that says if you know who Honest Abe was and can name three Beatles, your IQ is 140? How smart was that? I never did that. Maybe once.

You might be pretty good at something. Maybe it’s writing, math, binge-eating, hopefully not armed robbery. If you’re good at business and you made money, everybody thinks you’re smart. If you can factor out the inheritance dough and still say you did it on your own, you probably are smart. But what does that mean? Does it mean to do something well is intelligence? Actually, yes. That’s exactly what it means.
